I spent 14 years working in higher ed on the admin side in both small private liberal arts establishments and large public research schools and let me tell you, I have FEELINGS about academics. But you hit the nail on the head about snobbishness. Bush decided he'd rather go to a small liberal arts institution where his teaching carries a bigger weight in his reputation than it did at the large research institution he was at in Texas. He was a small fish in a big pond in Texas and research wasn't really his forte and he actually genuinely worried about his ability to get tenure there.
At the small school although culturally it's more snobbish, academically it's less so. Not that they don't think they're just as smart and capable as the professors from the large research institutions, it's just they think they're better than them because the culture is less publish or perish.
I love your image of Bush! Maybe he will be a bit of a farm boy from outside of Austin!
I think when he's drunk he embraces the Bush from Texas just to be an ass. Otherwise he's highly annoyed by it. :D
